Public required to complete and return juror questionnaires

The Hawaii State Judiciary has started mailing out approximately 235,000 juror questionnaires to residents across the islands.

These questionnaires are will be used for jury selection in 2014.

The judiciary does this every year in the first week of August.

If you receive a questionnaire, you have 10 days to complete and return it to the Jury Pool Office. Anyone that fails to respond may be penalized.

Requirements to be eligible to serve as a juror:

  • A United States citizen (a person born or naturalized in the U.S.) ;
  • A resident of the State of Hawaii;
  • A resident of the Circuit (A Circuit is similar to the county in which you reside);
  • 18 years or over;
  • Able to read, speak, and understand the English language;
  • Not been convicted of a felony in the State or Federal Court.

County distribution breakdown:

  • 85,000 City & County of Honolulu
  • 55,000 Maui County
  • 70,000 Hawaii County
  • 25,000 Kauai County

“The form also shall contain the prospective juror’s declaration that the prospective juror’s responses are true to the best of the prospective juror’s knowledge and the prospective juror’s acknowledgment that a wilful misrepresentation of a material fact may be punished by a fine of not more than $500 or imprisonment for not more than thirty days, or both.”

“Upon the failure or refusal of any person duly receiving the juror qualification form to complete and return it as required or instructed, the court, after first summoning the person to appear before the clerk to complete or correct the form, may punish the person for contempt.”

“Any person who wilfully misrepresents a material fact on a juror qualification form for the purpose of avoiding or securing service as a juror is guilty of a petty misdemeanor.”
