In addition to getting school supplies and new clothes, some kids do one more thing before heading back to class.
They get blessed and pray for good grades.
Shinto shrine in Kalihi held a special back to school blessing on Sunday.
“In Japan, literally millions of students flock to the shrine to pray for successful admission into competitive universities and high schools and so on. Here, the admissions system to school is a little different so we feature it in August so that we have children and families coming here to pray for successful academic year,” President Shinkien Naitoh said.
This is the same shrine that has a pet blessing event every June.
