Park ranger rescued from Haleakala crater

Maui firefighters rescued a park ranger in the Paliku area after he started experiencing difficulty breathing and chest pains.

Firefighters from Kula and Kahului fire stations responded to the incident at Haleakala National Park around 9:49 a.m. Wednesday.

A fire helicopter airlifted the ranger from the crater and transported him to a landing zone in the Hosmer Grove area.

Emergency medical officials met the patient at the Grove where they transported him via medevac helicopter to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
