A portion of the Old Lahaina Shopping Center was evacuated on Friday after contractors working on renovations ruptured a 2-inch underground propane main line.
Maui Fire Department crews from Lahaina along with the Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit responded to the incident.
A troubleshooter from the Hawaii Gas Company arrived and stopped the leak by closing an isolation valve located on the corner of Front Street and Papalaua Street. The main line was exposed and repaired shortly after.
No injuries were reported.
An all clear was given at about 1:15 p.m. and businesses were allowed to reopen.
