A 23-year-old man is dead after a single car accident on Maui.
The accident happened just before 11 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Omilu and Limu Eleele Places in Waihee-Waiehu.
According to Maui Police officials, the crash occurred when a black 1995 Toyota 4-Runner was traveling west on Limu Eleele Place failed to negotiate the turn and overturned within the roadway. The driver suffered fatal injuries and died on the scene.
Police identified the driver of the vehicle as Zackery McGuire. He was partially ejected from the car during the collision.
The front seat passenger, a 28-year-old Wailuku man, suffered minor injuries. He was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center where he was treated and later released.
According to police, the driver and the passenger were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.
Police say speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash.
The case remains under investigation, along with drug impairment.
This is Maui County’s 11th traffic fatality for 2013. There were 12 at this same time last year.
