Hundreds of consumers around the state have been getting a postcard in the mail offering them a free $100 gift card.
“They’re receiving a postcard saying that they qualified or that they won a $100 gift card to Costco or to Walmart or Target and all they have to do is call a number and pay a $6.95 fee to get that money,” Hawaii Better Business Bureau Communications Director Timothy Caminos said.
But, the Hawaii BBB says consumers should not pay the fee.
“When consumers engage with these postcards or the people behind it and they give out their information what happens is the people they give their information to enroll them in other programs,” Caminos said.
Caminos says the card cannot be redeemed.
He says once consumers give out their information to use the card, they are signed up for magazine subscriptions, make donations to charities and become members of clubs.
Unfortunately, dozens of consumers have fallen for the scheme.
“Unfortunately there have been a few consumers that have gone ahead and given out their information. They’ve lost upwards of $120 to $130,” Caminos said.
Caminos says you can always contact the Hawaii BBB to find out if it’s the real deal or not.
And, if you did give out your credit or debit card number– cancel the card immediately.
“It’s not going to ruin anyone’s credit for life however consumers will end up having top cancel their credit card or debit card changing their account number which does take time its an inconvenience to the consumer and they may be without some of that money for a while,” Caminos said.
