The internet is filled with stories about the recent shark incidents in Hawaii. One that may have been overlooked is one on Maui captured on video by the wife of Egypt visitor Ali Abdelaziz.

“I’m fascinated with shark, you know. I think it’s a very intriguing animal and I wanted to touch it, kind of, but my wife was in the back and she was kind of worried. she goes, we got three kids, you know — okay?,” Abdelaziz said.

Although his wife was concerned, Abdelaziz was not in much danger here. Still, tourism officials want people to be aware of their surroundings.

“You have to take the same precautions in Hawaii that you would anywhere else. If the sign says, don’t go in the water — don’t go in the water,” Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii President and Executive Director Jessica Lani Rich said.

Rich explains what to do if you encounter a shark in the water.

“First of all, make a phone call. A lot of people have apps now, they can go on their phone, and check out is it safe for me to go in this area. If you’re going to go swimming, it’s always best to go where there is a lifeguard,” Rich said.

The visitor industry obviously has a vested interest in the safety of those coming to the islands. KHON2 asked Abdelaziz if he was worried. He said no.

“Absolutely, absolutely. I went right back in the water right after. They didn’t close the beach or nothing. They living in the ocean, you know. Ocean got whales, got sharks, got everything — part of nature. You can drive in a car tomorrow and get in an accident and die, you know,” Abdelaziz said.

Headlines on the internet can cause some concern. A wife’s voice in the background could bring the message home.

“‘We have three kids. Come back.’ She was worried about me,” Abdelaziz said.
