Maui officials: German visitor bitten by shark on life support

A 20-year-old visitor from Germany is in very critical condition after she was bitten by a shark in waters off Maui’s south shore.

The incident happened last week Wednesday at White Rock Beach in Makena.

Maui officials say Jana Lutteropp was snorkeling about 50 yards from shore when a shark bit off her right arm, just below the shoulder.

A group from California swam out to help Lutteropp to shore.

She was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

According to Maui officials, Lutteropp is now on life support.

The family is asking for privacy during this very difficult time.
