Maui police are investigating a late-night crash that sent two people to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The crash happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday on Piilani Highway near Piikea Avenue.

Police say a 2006 grey Nissan Frontier pickup truck was traveling north on the highway when it crashed into the right side of a 1995 white Honda Civic two-door sedan that was making a left turn from Piikea Avenue onto Piilani Highway. The Nissan overturned and came to rest on its passenger side.

The driver of the Honda, a 20-year-old male from Wailuku, and his 19-year-old female passenger from Pukalani were taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, a 30-year-old male from Kihei, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police say the occupants in the Honda were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. The airbags in the Nissan were also deployed as a result of the crash.

The involvement of speed, alcohol, and drugs remain under investigation.
