A monkeypod tree believed to be more than a 100 years old was taken down Sunday.
The tree stood at the corner of Kalanianaole Highway and Kumuhau Street in Waimanalo.
But the last big storm partially uprooted the tree and made part of the sidewalk unusable.
A contractor started taking apart the tree and gave it to people who plan to make wood carvings out it.
“I think this is a win-win situation, where the community scores and our landfills are kept without this tree being mulched, and into the landfill and can go back to someone’s home,” Waimanalo resident Andy Jamila said.
Jamila says the sidewalk had been out of use for about four months because of the tree, forcing people to walk on the highway.
