HONOLULU (AP) – Gov. Neil Abercrombie is calling on the people of Hawaii to ring a bell to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The King Center and the 50th Anniversary Coalition called on governors nationwide to help culminate the anniversary with “Let Freedom Ring” bell-ringing events.

The governor’s office says Hawaii’s bell-ringing event will take place Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Abercrombie is also asking places of worship, government buildings and other facilities to join in the gesture if they’re able.

He says the diversity of the Aloha State remains a great source of strength and beauty but we are reminded that prejudice and injustice persist.
