An investigation is underway after an airplane crashed near Wheeler Army Airfield.
According to the U.S. Navy Public Affairs office, the incident happened at about 5:15 p.m. Tuesday when a civilian fixed-wing single-engine aircraft reported engine trouble. The aircraft then crashed into a pineapple field about one mile south of the airfield.
Officials say the pilot and passenger, both adult males, exited the downed aircraft on their own and did not appear to suffer any life-threatening injuries.
The pilot and passenger were taken to an area hospital for further evaluation and medical treatment.
The crash site was turned over to Honolulu Police Department who contacted the Federal Aviation Administration.
* Edit: The U.S. Navy originally noted the aircraft was a helicopter.
