The Asi family are active members at First United Methodist Church. The whole family is usually here two to three times a week.

“The whole family gives their heart and soul to the church and to God, they volunteer every week to keep our church grounds looking nice,” First United Methodist Church Reverend Amy Wake said.

All five children attended Sunday school regularly and church members doted on the 2-year-old boy.

“Everybody was carrying him cause he was all dressed up nicely and he had a new haircut, I think, so we’re gonna miss him,” Sunday school teacher Helena Ogle said.

Church members are still in disbelief about what happened. They say the family did everything together and would never let the boy run around unsupervised.

“Oh, yeah, yeah. The little one has two aunties, young adults, in the family. So there’s some adult people who really take care to watch the kids,” First United Methodist Church Reverend Linda Moa said.

Pastor Moa says the family didn’t express any anger toward the driver, but is just devastated by their loss.

The Asi family just went through another tragedy last year when the children’s grandfather died. The grandfather was the one who started volunteering to maintain the church grounds and the rest of the family has continued his work.

“They’re faithful and very committed to seeing God’s work done on earth and it’s so hard to see them go through this tragedy,” Reverend Wake said.

Honolulu police have opened a negligent homicide investigation on this incident.
