A road rage incident on a busy freeway ended with gun fire in Waimanalo Wednesday afternoon.

KHON2 News was on the scene as police surrounded Keolu Drive near Enchanted Lake.

That’s where police got lucky in spotting a motorcyclist stuck in traffic, who witnesses say had just left the scene of a shooting in Waimanalo. It was his white helmet that gave him away.

“The identification was made by the distinctive parts and markings on motorcycle and suspect’s helmet,” Honolulu Police Department Capt. Dagan Tsuchida said.

When the 21-year-old man spotted officers, he tried to drive off and hit two police cars along the way. He then ditched his bike and ran.

“He tried to flee on foot and responding officers managed to chase him down and apprehend him,” Capt. Tsuchida said.

The suspect was taken into custody for felony terroristic threatening, felony reckless endangering, and resisting arrest.

It all started on the H-3 Freeway when the suspect and at least two other friends on motorcycles got into a road rage incident with woman driving in her car.

“The driver of the car apparently called family members and was giving them updates on her location driving towards Waimanalo,” Capt. Tsuchida said.

The driver, her two family members, and the three motorcyclists all caught up with each other on Kalanianaole Highway near Ehukai Street. Police say that’s when a physical fight began.

“As I was coming out of my house two came around here and one guy, the leader of the bikers, got lickin’,” Waimanalo resident Stephen Young said.

Young says one family member was trying to get back in his vehicle, but the motorcyclist pulled out a gun.

“Before he got in the truck guy said, ‘I got something for you,'” Young said. “I saw him reach into his bag looking for something and came out with one handgun and started doing this, all you could hear when the was truck was pulling away was a guy shooting gun, ‘pa, pa, pa, pa.'”

Police say at least two shots were fired into the ground. No one was hurt.

The family member drove off and the motorcyclist followed. That’s where he was spotted at Keolu Drive and arrested.

Police are trying to track down the two other motorcyclists who were with the suspect.

The woman driver and her family are cooperating with police.
