The 5th Annual Maui Electric Company Keiki Tilapia Fishing Tournament was held Sunday, at the Ka’anapali Golf Courses on Maui.

The sold-out event brought 600 children and their families out for fun and excitement as hooks were baited and the fish cooperated resulting in laughter and smiles to everyone participating.

This annual tourney helps to raise funds for the Maui United Way.

Ed Kageyama, PGA General Manager at Ka’anapali Golf Courses, commented on the event, “We love to host the Annual Keiki Fishing Tournament – it is a great way for families to spend the morning together creating memories and raising funds for an important Maui organization.”

Commenting on the great turnout and the funds raised, Sharon Suzuki, President of Maui Electric Company (MECO) said, “As a major employer in Maui County, we feel it is very important to help make our community a better place to live, work and raise our families. It is an honor for MECO to partner with Ka’anapali Golf Courses to raise money for Maui United Way that in turn supports many different agencies in the County. These agencies help those in need. By partnering, we can do a lot more to help.”

It has become a popular tradition for families to enjoy the annual tournament and teach young children the joy of fishing passed from one generation to the next.

At the same time, the event is supporting Maui United Way to meet pressing needs in the community through their partner agencies. In the past five years, the Keiki Tilapia Fishing Tournament has raised over $50,000 for Maui United Way.
