Family grieves death of woman run over by her truck

A Kahaluu family is looking for answers after their wife and mother was run over by her own truck.

“Right now I don’t feel too good right now,” husband Mikaele Mikaele said.

Mikaele can’t believe his loving wife is gone.

“My wife was a beautiful wife I ever seen,” Mikaele said.

Kadinia Mikaele, 46, had spent the afternoon at their church in Waimanalo and was almost home.

At about 2 p.m., she pulled her truck up their steep driveway like she always did. But this time something went wrong.

“Too bad we never seen what happened,” Mikaele said.

Honolulu police say she was by herself. She was unlocking her gate when the truck started to roll back. She tried to stop it and was run over.

“It [the truck] is an automatic, but is unclear at this point if she was trying to get back into the vehicle, say if it was rolling, or why she was by the vehicle afterwards. But we do know she was run over by her own vehicle,”  HPD Lt. Robert Towne said.

Neighbors heard the crash and ran out.

“Per a neighbor they had heard a truck that had crashed into a house and when the neighbor came out to see, he had saw a female laying on the driveway,” Lt. Towne said.

They called 911 and Kadinia was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

“I rushed to hospital and was told she won’t make it,” Mikaele said.

She died at the hospital.

The Mikaele family are caretakers of the property on Halemanu Street that she was heading home to. The couple helped run a plant nursery.

“The whole family was waiting for me at hospital and I rush over there,” Mikaele said.

Her husband had to break the news to their daughter and three sons who are in college on the mainland.

“A big loss. My wife and all my boys stay in college trying to come back,” Mikaele said.

Police investigators are trying to figure out how this happened, whether she didn’t secure her parking break, or if it was a mechanical failure.
