A mechanical failure at a Maui pump station caused approximately 1,900 gallons of sewage to spill in Kihei, according to the County of Maui’s Department of Management.
The incident was reported shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of South Kihei Road and Waimahaihai Street.
Maui officials say the sewage flowed from the pump station site to the grassy area in the adjacent lot occupied by the Kihei Fire Station.
Officials say approximately 35 gallons of the overflow entered a storm sewer fronting the pump station on South Kihei Road, about 1,000 feet away from the ocean.
Bacteriological analyses are being conducted, however, the department is confident the overflow did not reach the ocean.
No beaches were closed.
Officials say the malfunction was fixed and the spill site at South Kihei Road was cleaned and disinfected.
The state Department of Health has been notified.
