A 31-year-old Maui man remains hospitalized following a single-vehicle crash in Kapaa early Sunday morning.
According to Kauai police, the crash happened at about 2 a.m. when a Ford sedan apparently struck a coconut tree along Aleka Loop and flipped onto its passenger side, pinning the driver in the vehicle.
Firefighters used a saw to cut through the car’s roof in order to extricate the driver. He was taken to Wilcox Hospital then transferred to Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu.
Two male passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the collision, ages 50 and 51. Both men were uninjured in the crash.
Aleka Loop was closed in both directions until roughly 4 a.m.
At this time, it is unknown if alcohol or other intoxicants were contributing factors in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
