Arson investigation opened after University Avenue apartment fire

Honolulu police have opened an arson investigation after an apartment fire on University Avenue.

The fire broke out at about 9 p.m. Tuesday in a unit on the 18th floor of the Ala Wai Plaza.

Honolulu firefighters were able to stop it from spreading to other units.

The fire was extinguished by 9:20 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Three people lived in the apartment unit. One of them was arrested and the other two were not home at the time of the fire.

The American Red Cross is assisting the affected residents.

A portion of Kapiolani Boulevard and University Avenue was closed while crews worked to put out the fire.
