Polynesian Cultural Center celebrates 50th anniversary

50 years

The Polynesian Cultural Center is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The Polynesian-themed park is located on the North Shore of Oahu.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints created it to promote the Polynesian culture and provide work for students at Brigham Young University-Hawaii.

Thousands of Mormons have traveled to Hawaii to celebrate this week. Those include alumni who worked there years ago, some in their 70s.

According to the park’s website, more than 33 million people have visited the center over the 50 years.

The Polynesian Cultural Center opened to the public on Oct. 12, 1963.
