A 23- year-old escapee from a correctional facility was captured by Big Island police Thursday morning.

At 10:25 a.m., acting on a tip, police arrested Robert Garcia for second-degree escape at a home on Ohai Street in Hilo. Garcia attempted to flee from police, but was captured following a brief foot pursuit.

At 4:17 p.m., after conferring with prosecutors, detectives charged Garcia with escape and his bail was set at $10,000. He was also arrested for a drug offense, but was released without charges on that offense.

Garcia was one of two inmates who escaped Sept. 4 from the Hale Nani Correctional Center in Hilo.

On Sept. 6, 27-year-old Andrew Wanat was arrested in Kona for escape.
