The University of Hawaii Athletics Department lost $2 million last year. That’s not taking into account a $13 million deficit the Board of Regents forgave.
On Thursday, UH Athletics Director Ben Jay said he is moving forward with a five-year plan that will make the department one of the top 50 in the nation with the help of the community and corporate sponsorships.
“This plan is to outline how you, our fans, and the community can help us achieve our strategic plan goals,” Jay said.
“When they recruit the kids and the kids come here and they see the facilities that we have or they go to Oregon and look at those facilities, it’s night and day,” Na Koa Booster Don Murphy said.
Outrigger Hotels and Hawaii Pacific Health have also increased their support of the UH Athletics program.
