A couple made a grisly discovery in Central Oahu Sunday.

They were looking for cans off Mililani Memorial Park Road when they found a body.

“It was about 4:40 p.m., quarter to five, when we smelled the smell,” Sheer Sotelo said.

It’s a smell she will never forget.

Her husband came upon the body first in the ravine off Mililani Memorial Park Road.

“So I walked across the street where he was and he was trying to show me,” Sotelo said. “And I couldn’t see it at first, and then he threw something at it and when I threw it, that’s when I could see the arm. You could only his top half, but you couldn’t see anything else. Even his head and then you could see rubbish bags all around him. And you can see the tattoo on his arm still yet.”

Honolulu police say the body is in a state of decomposition, hence the smell.

“When I smelled that, I said it ain’t no animal. I know it’s not an animal,” Sotelo said.

“This body has numerous suspicious injuries. Therefore, we are treating this as a homicide,” Honolulu Police Department Capt. Lisa Mann said.

Police combed about a 100 yards along the road looking for evidence.

Honolulu firefighters were called to the scene to help retrieve the body.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions.

“The sex, age, and race of this body is unknown at this time,” Capt. Mann said. “There’s decompositions. We’re unable to tell.”

Police have opened a murder investigation.
