Kauai police arrested a non-compliant sex offender at the Kukuiula Small Boat Harbor in Koloa on Thursday.
Bernard Almeida, Jr., age 59 of Koloa, was arrested and charged with 14 felony counts of non-compliance. Almeida is a registered sex offender who has failed to register since August of last year.
He is currently being held at the Kauai Community Correctional Center in lieu of $13,000 bail. According to the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, Almeida is scheduled to appear in District Court on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
State law requires registered sex offenders to keep their registration information, including their contact information, updated and accurate. Failing to do so is a Class C felony, punishable by up to five years imprisonment for each violation.
The Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center (HCJDC), an agency of the state Department of the Attorney General, keeps a public listing of all registered sex offenders in the state.
