Autopsy results show Big Island opihi picker accidentally drowned

An autopsy report showed that the death of 27-year-old James McGivern, Jr. was accidental, due to drowning.

On Sept. 13, Hamakua Police responded to the report of a fisherman who had been swept into the ocean at Kawela’s Beach near Honokaa.

The incident happened at 2:30 p.m.

The Paauilo resident was picking opihi with two friends.

The Hawaii Fire Department recovered his body.

He was pronounced dead at the Hale Hoola Hamakua Emergency Room.
