When Honolulu police identified Alex Gonzales as the murder victim whose body was found in Waipio, Germaine — who’s afraid to reveal her last name — felt like she had lost a son.
“It’s just a shock. I woke up this morning and told my daughter. I am shocked just shocked,” Germaine said.
Germaine had hired Gonzales to work in a storage facility in Honolulu and worked for her for a couple of years, but wound up getting fired for always showing up late. After that, she let him stay at her house in Makiki with his girlfriend and tried to help him get another job.
“I really loved the guy. He was a good guy, that’s why I tried to help him still yet, you know?” Germaine said.
Last year, Gonzales moved to an apartment with some friends in Waikiki. A neighbor there says he was always nice to everyone. She can’t imagine someone would actually be angry enough to kill him and go as far as chop up his body.
“God I was shocked I’m still shocked I don’t know it’s awful I don’t see how these things happen.” former neighbor Lily Rathman said.
Friends say Gonzales also wound up homeless and spent time living on the streets in Waikiki. Many of them there knew him as “Gonzo” and they’re just as surprised.
“I want to know what the hell happened. I want to know what could have been done, know what I mean, to anybody to make him do that to him,” Gonzales’ friend Andy Rzepecki said.
Gonzales had also been working as a commercial fisherman lately and friends thought that his life was actually getting better. But his brutal killing now has everyone at a loss.
“I don’t know what would cause a person to be that evil and I don’t know what a person can do to be treated that bad,” Germaine said.
Gonzales leaves behind a mother, who lives on Kauai, a sister and a son who live on the mainland.
