Homeowners being warned about roof repair scheme

The state and Hawaii Better Business Bureau are keeping a close eye on a growing business trend.

The BBB has received several calls over the last few weeks from consumers concerned about companies aggressively calling or telling them that they can provide an estimate on roof repairs.

“They’re using weather-related events, so it hailed a few months ago, high winds may have damaged your roof or yard, or even heavy rains. So they’re using any kind of weather-related event to try and get into your home,” said Timothy Caminos, Hawaii BBB. “While some names they’ve checked out and they have business reviews with us, other names we were unable to find anything in our system or registered with the state of Hawaii.”

“Something that our office is going to look into is whether or not the work that’s being done if we get complaints from consumers meets industry standards,” said Daria Loy-Goto, Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

In some cases, mainland companies are partnering with licensed Hawaii companies.
