A large colony of shearwater birds on Kauai has been decimated by dogs and feral cats.
The state needs the public’s help to keep the birds alive.
Since July, officials say more than 80 of the native seabirds have been found dead along Kauai’s south shore.
At this time of year, the birds are nesting, making them vulnerable to dogs and cats.
The state is urging pet owners to keep their dogs on leashes and their cats indoors.
Fishermen often rely on shearwater birds to help them locate schools of tuna.
