Sports writing legend Jim Hackleman dead at 86

Jim Hackleman was one of Hawaii’s finest sports writers. He was a man who had no problem telling it like it is. He died last week in California at the age of 86.

The man many simply called “Hack” was the sports editor at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for more than 20 years from the 1960s into the 80s. He also spent some time at KHON2 anchoring weekend sports. He did radio work for UH baseball and the Pacific Coast League Islanders and was a public relations executive at Communications Pacific. He was also player and manager of the Columbia Inn Roundtable all-star softball team.

Jim Hackleman is survived by his son John, daughter Susan and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
