16-year-old Jimmy “Ulu Boy” Napeahi from Kalapana was attacked by a shark August 18 Pohoiki Bay.
Napeahi said it hit him so fast he didn’t know what was happening.
Callers who were at Pohoiki Bay the day he was attacked called 911.
“I’m down at Pohoiki the boat ramp and somebody just got bit by a shark,” caller said.
“He’s got probably a six or seven-inch laceration from his chest to the adipose tissue. You can see a little bit of the muscle, but the bleeding has been controlled,” another caller said.
Napeahi says he’s seen sharks before but usually got out of the water in time.
He needed 180 stitches below the waist.
Napeahi is continuing with physical therapy and hopes to get back in the water in a month.
