A former Big Island police officer convicted of murder is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for another parole hearing.

In 1996, Kenneth Mathison was convicted for the 1992 kidnapping and murder of his wife, Yvonne Mathison.

On July 15, 2009, the Hawaii Paroling Authority (HPA) set Mathison’s minimum parole terms for the offenses at 20 years for the kidnapping conviction and 90 years for the murder conviction.

The minimum terms are the amount of time Mathison must spend in prison for each offense before he can be released on parole.

Certain procedural problems arose during the July 2009 hearing, therefore, the HPA is holding a new hearing to re-determine the minimum terms.

The state has concluded that the minimum terms set in July 2009 were correct and is asking the HPA to leave the minimum terms unchanged.
