Pensacola Street reopened

Pensacola Street Emergency Work

Honolulu police have reopened all lanes on Pensacola Street near Kinau Street that was closed due to a gas leak.

The section of road was initially closed by the Hawaii Gas Company to perform emergency repair work on its underground utility pipeline at 8:00 a.m. Friday.

When the HPD determined the roads could not be reopened, they issued a traffic alert that the road was closed until further notice at 2:00 p.m.

The road was reopened about 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

“Right now, the gas leak is contained and we’re fine. The good thing about natural gas is once it’s released, it dissipates into the air. It is lighter than air, so we’re okay right now,” HAWAIIGAS Communications Specialist Casey Nishimura said on Friday.

The cause of the gas leak is under investigation.
