Big Island man dies after being struck by vehicle

A 26-year-old Kailua-Kona man is dead following a crash on the Big Island.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday on Highway 11 near the junction with Puuloa Road in Kailua-Kona.

According to police, a 2004 Mercedes-Benz was traveling south on the highway when it ran over a man who was lying across the southbound lane. Authorities say the victim, identified as Richard Penrose, died at the scene.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

The driver of the vehicle, 39-year-old Christian S. Yamagata of Kealakekua, was not injured. He was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Yamagata was released pending further investigation.

This is the 23rd fatality this year on the Big Island compared with 30 at this time last year.
