Kauai man develops first-ever atomic wristwatch

Atomic wristwatch

A small watch company on Kauai is causing a worldwide buzz after creating a wristwatch powered by an atomic clock.

Dr. John Patterson, of Kapaa, started Bathys Hawaii in 2005, making custom watches that could withstand Hawaii’s active lifestyle.

But Patterson, who is a doctor of neurology, says the Cesium 113 wristwatch is the first wristwatch in the world that uses atomic clock technology to keep extremely accurate time.

“The actual inside the watch is all of the technology. There’s a laser in there, heaters. There’s no radioactivity, nothing unsafe inside of it,” Patterson said.

Patterson says the technology was originally used by the military to guide submarines underwater. The watch will stay accurate to within one second every 1,000 years.
