Folks on board a whale watching cruise got what they paid for on Tuesday.

A very active pod of whales named the “competitive pod” put on quite a show for the whale watchers just outside of Honolulu Harbor.

They saw numerous whale surfacing behavior such as breaching and tail slaps.

Officials say it’s quite unusual to see all these different activities in one day. They believe the behavior is due to the mating season.

“So we probably had a female being chased by five or six males, all competing for her favor, trying to woo her,” said Kristi Layman, a naturalist with Navatek.

Hawaii’s whale season lasts through March.
