Man accused of cashing dead mother’s benefits

Mail fraud investigation

A Salt Lake man is accused of cashing in on his mother’s death.

Steven Splayter has been indicted on mail fraud charges.

Between March 2000 and July 2011, authorities say the 58-year-old collected disability payments intended for his dead mom.

He’s also accused of telling the state she was still alive, all in an effort to collect her benefits.

Authorities say he defrauded the state out of more than $223,000.

Splater was released on bond.

His trial begins in March.
