Canoe paddlers from Kauai paid their respects to a fallen soldier on Sunday.

Members from the Kauai Hoe Wa’a participated in the inaugural Sgt. Drew Scobie Memorial Run.

The Hawaii Army National Guardsman was killed earlier this month when the surveillance aircraft he was in went down in eastern Afghanistan.

“Our hearts go out to his family. Even though I might not know him personally, I do recognize him and I thank him and his family,” said Keone Miyake of Kauai Hoe Wa’a.

Sgt. Scobie worked at Straub Hospital & Clinic.

He is survived by his wife, son, and child on the way.

Sgt. Scobie’s uncle is a part of the paddling community on Kauai.

Proceeds from Sunday’s event will go to Sgt. Scobie’s family.

Services for Sgt. Scobie are still pending.
