Lawmakers discuss whale strikes at State Capitol

Lawmakers met to discuss plans to protect humpback whales from vessels in Hawaii waters.

This comes after 10 whales were struck last year.

Officials say that’s higher than the normal number of strikes.

“But in cases where we can show and demonstrate that the approach was a clear violation, then it’s going to be handled that way,” said Randy Awo, Division of Conservation & Resource Enforcement.

Officials say there’s been one whale strike so far this year.
