She ran across the field at Aloha Stadium during the Pro Bowl game and drew cheers from the crowd. But Katrina Torres didn’t do it for them or herself. She was keeping a promised to a loved one who really needed a lift.
It happened in the fourth quarter and KHON2′s camera on the sideline briefly caught Torres jumping in from the stands into the end zone.
“They made the touchdown and all the security turned to look. And I just jumped over the wall and once I hit the ground, I knew I wasn’t gonna stop. So, I just kept running,” Torres said.
Network cameras turned away from it, as is usually the case. Those in the stands caught it with their cell phone cameras. But the few seconds Torres got on national TV meant the world to her cousin Gary, who was watching in New Mexico.
“He can’t talk, but he was just smiling a lot and he was just fist pumping. They said as soon as we saw you jump, his face just lit up and he was just fist pumping and stuff so that made it so worth it for me,” Torres said.
Gary got in a motorcycle accident two years ago and is now paralyzed and can’t talk. He always wanted to go to the Pro Bowl and was supposed to go this year, but it was too difficult.
So Torres, a New Mexico native who moved to Hawaii five years ago, promised him that she would run across the field for him. She even had the phrase, “I did it for Gary” written on her back.
“I just wanted to keep my promise, stay true to my word. And I had told my mom, I told my auntie, my grandma. I was like, ‘I’m gonna do this. You guys might have to bail me out’. And they were so for it,” Torres said.
As it turns out, no one had to bail her out. After security guards caught her, team captain Deion Sanders heard her story and came to the rescue.
“Deion Sanders came running behind us and he’s like, ‘Hey don’t arrest her. That was really cool. Just don’t arrest her. If you arrest her, I’m gonna bail her right out,’” Torres said.
Torres says she was ready to go to jail if she had to, knowing that if it made her cousin smile, it would have been worth it.
What Torres did is illegal. She may not be going to jail, but she is being punished.
Torres is banned from Aloha Stadium for a year.
KHON2 called the Stadium Authority and it had no comment on the incident.
