More help could be coming in the fight against little fire ants.

State lawmakers advanced a bill that would provide more than $500,000 towards efforts to gather and kill the stinging insects, including money to pay for trained dogs to sniff out the tiny pests.

The little fire ants leave painful welts on people and can blind pets.

The state says the ants have been on Oahu for at least a year, after first landing on the Big Island.
