Two Minnesota women were rescued early Tuesday morning after spending the night in the mountains behind Manoa Valley. Rescue crews got the call at around 8:30 a.m.
The hikers told KHON2 they didn’t expect it to get dark so quickly Monday night, so they searched for an area to spend the night.
“We found a flat spot and we just found some leaves and covered up and stayed for the night,” said hiker Julie Sibert. “When we woke up this morning, we followed our tracks back almost to the trail, but then we turned the wrong way and wound up (in a steep area) again, so we called for help.”
Fire crews used a helicopter and sling to airlift them one at a time to Manoa Valley District Park. Both women were back on the ground safely by 10 a.m.
“It was a real good view,” said Sibert. “It was the highlight of the trip, the trip down.”
