A grand opening is set this weekend for The Groove Hawaii, a miniature amusement and entertainment park located in the heart of Kakaako. The former home of a haunted house and a skating rink is now filled with segways, rides, a climbing wall and arcade. It will open for the first time on Saturday.
The main attraction on the three-acre property is the go-kart racing track, which will feature 34 go-karts, some for adults and children at least 46 inches in height. There will also be tandem karts so families can ride together.
The locally owned business has hired dozens of workers with the hope of attracting visitors and kamaaina.
“We’ve got probably about 40 people out here seven days a week from about 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, landscaping, pouring cement and getting the track ready,” said Alex Kite of The Groove Hawaii.
“Right now, we’re pretty much cleaning and doing any last minute landscaping, but hopefully I get to be a pit marshall, like one of the supervisors or something like that,” said employee Ericson Bautista.
The park is looking to hire 15 more as part of a multi-million-dollar investment that will also include a local food truck, fresh smoothies, handmade brick-oven pizzas and an herb garden.
Best of all, admission and parking are both free. “You can come and hang out, there is nothing to get in,” Kite said. “Each activity will have a price and all the food will have a price.”
