Fun photo: Praying mantis sheds its skin

Here’s something you don’t see everyday. Maui resident Jen Tom got up close to a praying mantis in Kaanapali just moments after it had shed its skin and snapped this photo.

“It was so beautiful,” Tom said. “First of all, I didn’t know that praying mantis shed. Second of all, I didn’t even think twice about the picture until I came home and took a look at them and realized that I had some pretty good shots.”

According to KeepingInsects.com, a praying mantis won’t eat a few days before it sheds its skin or molts. A mantis can live for two weeks without any food.
