Box jellyfish warning, 50+ stings reported on Oahu

Ocean Safety lifeguards posted box jellyfish warning signs Monday morning at Ala Moana Beach Park, the beaches along Waikiki, Pokai Bay and Hanauma Bay. The following count was provided by the city’s Ocean Safety Division.

Ala Moana: 70 counted, 0 stings
Waikiki: 700 counted, 49 stings
Pokai Bay: about 50 counted, 0 stings
Hanauma Bay: 150-200, 4 stings

Emergency officials say at 8:40 a.m. Monday, a 12-year-old boy was taken from Waikiki to a nearby hospital after an apparent reaction to a box jellyfish sting.
