Honolulu police found the boy on Kuhio Ave. and took him to the Waikiki substation.

The ringing of the school bell at Kauluwela Elementary School led to moments of sheer panic for the parents of a five-year-old boy when school officials realized he was missing.

The boy was found safe at a bus stop on Kuhio Ave. in Waikiki just before 3:30 p.m. Police took him to the Waikiki police station where his dad picked him up.

According to the boy’s father, his son is autistic, so he doesn’t speak much and he couldn’t say how he got to Waikiki. The father says his son did not have any money or a bus pass on him.

Earlier, both parents were relieved to learn he was okay. “We don’t know how he got there or who he was with, but he’s safe, absolutely 100 percent that he’s safe,” said the boy’s mother, Gabrielle Valdes.

Both the school and police are now trying to figure out how the boy ended up off campus and how he ended up in Waikiki.
