An elderly woman has died after she was struck by a city garbage truck in Kalihi. The incident at 5:50 a.m. Thursday on North King St. near Gulick Ave.
The medical examiner’s office has identified her as 70-year-ol Barbara N. Kato of Honolulu.
Honolulu police says the truck was making a left-hand turn when it struck her. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition where she later died.
“I was deeply saddened to hear about this tragic accident and want to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the victim’s family,” Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell said in a statement. “The City will be cooperating fully in the pending investigation.”
Lt. Bobby Towne says the woman was walking in a marked crosswalk.
Traffic investigators say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident. It is unknown if speed is a factor.
