HONOLULU – Juliene Jones had two hits and two RBI and Marcus Doi had a pinch-hit RBI single, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a series split to Pepperdine in a 7-3 loss to the Waves on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd at Les Murakami Stadium.
Eric Gleese (0-2) earned his first start but was hit early and often which proved to be the difference in the game. He gave up four second-inning runs on four hits and was lifted for Josh Elms after three complete innings. Back-to-back bases loaded hits by Brandon Caruso (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI) and Manny Jefferson (2 H, 1 RBI) helped the Waves to the early 4-0 lead.
Aaron Brown (2-0) earned the win on the mound and did the designated hitting for the Waves who improved to 8-3. He allowed three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts, and went 3-5 with two runs and one RBI at the plate.
Jones started at third and also pitched one and one-third innings of scoreless relief. He had two hits and two RBI including a run-scoring double in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 7-3. Steven Ventimilia, Kaeo Aliviado, and Marc Flores each added one hit and one RBI.
UH (6-6) squandered an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Trevor Podratz came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, but fouled out to end the inning. The ‘Bows finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Marcus Doi delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to score Aliviado to cap the inning and make a game of it.
