Internet users can now go online in Kakaako, free of charge.
Kamehameha Schools announced Tuesday the activation of a free, public WiFi network throughout Our Kakaako, a nine-block area bounded by Ala Moana Blvd. and South, Halekauwila and Cooke Sts.
Organizers say the network, which launched Saturday, is accessible on any wireless device and will be noticeably faster than an average network with data transfers up to 10 times faster than most home Internet connections.
More than 20 wireless access points were placed throughout the neighborhood for seamless roaming. The system, designed by Hawaii Dialogix Telecom, is also meant to accommodate a large number of simultaneous users.
“Our community WiFi will not only increase wireless access for everyone who works and visits the neighborhood, but it will further enhance the innovation and creativity that Our Kakaako is known for,” said Erin Kinney, Kamehameha Schools development manager.
