Gauchos gash Rainbow Warriors

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The University  of Hawai`i got burnt by the long ball for the second straight game in an 86-77 loss to UC Santa Barbara Thursday night at the The Thunderdome. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 19-10 overall and 8-7 in the Big West with its second consecutive road loss.

One week after falling to Long Beach State on a last-second three-pointer, UH fell victim to a three-point barrage by the Gauchos (20-8, 11-4 BWC), who nailed 10-of-16 from long range. The Gauchos hit seven of those in the first half.

The loss, coupled with Cal State Fullerton’s loss to UC Irvine, guaranteed UH a fourth-place finish in the Big West standings heading into the final regular-season game of the year.

Christian Standhardinger led four UH players in double-digits with 18 points and seven rebounds. Keith Shamburger found his shooting touch to finish with 16 points.  Alan Williams led a balanced UCSB attack with 18 points and 11 rebounds,  while Kyle Boswell poured in 17.

UH held an early 7-5 lead, but after that it was all Gauchos. UCSB went on a 16-2 run to take a double-digit lead. The Gauchos hit six of its first seven three-point attempts to and built its lead to as many as 19 points. The ‘Bows scored 10 unanswered to cut the deficit to nine points late in the half, but the Gauchos ultimately retained a double-digit lead, 39-27, going into the locker room.

UCSB maintained that double-digit lead throughout much of the second half and led again by 19 points with a little over four minutes left. UH made one last surge to cut the deficit to just eight points with 1:31 remaining, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Rainbow Warriors return for their final home game of the season as UH hosts Cal State Fullerton on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Seniors Davis Rozitis, Brandon Spearman and Standhardinger will be honored as part of Senior Night festivities. It will also be a “Whiteout Night” as all fans are encouraged to wear white apparel.
