Piikoi lanes to close for pool deck delivery

An traffic alert for drivers who use Piikoi St.: With construction at Ala Moana Center in full swing, plan ahead for what could be a traffic nightmare.

On Monday, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m., two makai-bound lanes of Piikoi St. fronting 1350 Ala Moana Blvd. will be closed while materials for a new pool deck are delivered to the building.

“We’re going to have everyone go into one lane,” said general manager Ron Komine. “The tractor trailer is going to be a long 18-wheeler, so it’s going to take up the whole space… About 20 crates have to be lifted above to our third floor deck, over our foliage and our trees.”

Komine says all the permits for the partial road closure are in place and neighboring condominiums and businesses have been alerted and those who live in the area are preparing for congestion.

“It’s going to make it crazy hectic,” said area resident Roel Bala. “It’s going to be packed around here.”

Drivers can also anticipate delays on Waimanu St., especially by the right-hand turn onto Piikoi St.

“There really will be nowhere to go,” said area resident Austin Weihmiller. “Just avoid Piikoi at all cost. Go around it or something.”

Komine understands traffic will be an issue Monday and asks area residents and businesses in advance for their patience. “We’re so concerned about the future of Kakaako and Ala Moana that we all work together so we’re just trying to be good neighbors,” he said.

“It won’t be fun driving through here and crossing the street here will be a nightmare,” said Weihmiller. “It will be scary as usual. I’ll stay in my apartment.”
